Apple Watch (Series 4) Users Report Spiking Heart Rates in Sleep

Some Apple Watch users are reporting a strange and potentially concerning phenomenon: their heart rates spiking during sleep, seemingly without explanation.

The issue was first brought to light on Reddit, where user “Mike-shaw-04” recounted their experience of seeing their heart rate suddenly jump from 45 beats per minute (bpm) to 100-125 bpm in the early hours of the morning. What’s more, they noticed that the Watch’s heart rate readings would sometimes have gaps during these spikes.

Other users soon chimed in to say that they had experienced similar issues.

“I’ve had the same thing happen to me the past few nights,” wrote one.

“I’ll be in REM sleep and my HR [heart rate] will jump to 130bpm for no reason and stay there for 10-15 minutes before returning to normal.”

There are a few possible explanations for the phenomenon. One is that the Watch is simply not reading the user’s heart rate correctly when it is not seated correctly on the wrist. However, as Mike-shaw-04 points out, they tried to duplicate the conditions under which the Watch might become dislodged during sleep (by running the Heart Rate app and then wiggling the Watch while holding it in different positions), but could not get the Watch to produce inaccurate readings.

Another possibility is that the Watch is picking up on something that is not actually a spike in heart rate, but is instead an artifact of the way heart rate is measured. As one Reddit user explained, heart rate is measured by shining light through the skin to detect changes in blood flow, so it is possible that the Watch is picking up on changes in blood flow that are not actually indicative of a spike in heart rate.

However, given the number of users who are reporting the same issue, it seems likely that there is something more going on. Apple has not yet commented on the reports, so it remains to be seen what the cause of the issue is and whether or not it will be addressed in a future software update.
